Mössbauer, EPR and magnetic investigations of brown coal heart treated under pressure

Abstract

It could be shown that the pyrrhotine is originated both from pyrite existing originally and from pyrite formed during the thermal treatment of brown coal under pressure with admixture of slurry oil at temperature of 400°C. Addition of a catalyst (α-Fe2O3) to the sample during the thermal transformation process results in conversion of this catalyst to pyrite due to the reaction with H2S. The presence of the pyrrhotine can be demonstrated already at 360°C with the aid of magnetic and Mössbauer spectroscopy methods. At 400°C beside the rest of pyrite about 75% of the iron still exists in the form of Fe1−x S, manifesting itself in a strong line broadening of the EPR spectra.
