High-frequency modulation of the spatial field structure in a ruby laser

Soviet Physics Journal Aims and scope

Abstract

A laser is considered in which the nonuniformity in the deexcitation of the level populations by the standing-wave field is eliminated by a longitudinal variation of the field structure. The field is varied by two phase modulators on different sides of the active element. The phase shifts of the modulators are equal in value but opposite in sign, so that there is no detuning of the resonator and no amplitude modulation. It is shown theoretically that for a modulation amplitude Ψm = 1.202 the deexcitation nonuniformity is completely eliminated and only one longitudinal mode is generated. Under these conditions the linewidth of the spectrum was reduced by a factor of not less than 10.
