Sintering chromic oxide with an additive

Conclusions

An investigation was carried out of the influence of certain additives on the sintering of chromic oxide.

In an air medium, chromic oxide does not sinter at all without an additive. It achieves slight sintering with added TiO2 and a higher degree of sintering when aluminosilicates are added. The effect of TiO2 on the sintering process is significantly more marked in a reducing medium.

It was established that a relation exists between the degree of sintering and the change in the lattice parameters of the Cr2O3 caused by the addition of TiO2, and between the degree of sintering of aluminosillicate-containing chromic oxide and the percent glass-forming silica in the additive.

Chromic oxide specimens were produced to a porosity of about 15%.
