Summary

It has been found that in the presence of concentrated acids with aromatic or heterocyclic aldehydes, sterols can be condensed to deeply coloured compounds which have been identified as “Carbenium”-salts. These salts act in the same way as theWizinger ethylenes. The table shows the relation between colour and constitution.
