As fixed wireless access (FWA) is still envisioned as a reasonable way to achieve communications links, foliage attenuation becomes an important wireless channel impairment in the millimeter-wave bandwidth. Foliage is modeled in the radiative transfer equation as a medium of random scatterers. However, other phenomena in the wireless channel may also occur. In this work, vegetation attenuation measurements are presented for a single tree alley for 26–32 GHz. The results show that vegetation loss increases significantly after the second tree in the alley. Measurement-based foliage losses are compared with model-based, and new tuning parameters are proposed for models. Full article

Polyhexamethylene Biguanide Reduces High-Risk Human Papilloma Virus Viral Load in Cervical Cell Samples Derived from ThinPrep Pap Test

Human papilloma virus (HPV) infection and its progression still represent a great medical challenge worldwide. Clinical evidence has demonstrated the beneficial effects of polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) on HPV clinical manifestations; however, evidence of the effect of this molecule on HPV viral load is still lacking. In this in vitro study, 13 ThinPrep Papanicolaou (Pap) tests were treated with a PHMB solution (0.10 g/100 mL) for 2 h. We observed no cytological changes but a significant reduction in the viral load of high-risk (HR) HPV after PHMB treatment, also revealing a dose-dependent antiviral effect. In addition, by stratifying the obtained results according to HR-HPV genotype, we observed a significant reduction in the viral load of HPV 16, P2 (56, 59, 66), 31, and P3 (35, 39, 68) and a strong decrease in the viral load of HPV 45, 52, and P1 (33, 58). Overall, 85% of the analyzed cervical cell samples exhibited an improvement in HPV viral load after PHMB exposure, while only 15% remain unchanged. For the first time, the data from this pilot study support the activity of PHMB on a specific phase of the HPV viral lifecycle, the one regarding the newly generated virions, reducing viral load and thus blocking the infection of other cervical cells. Since March 2020, there have been multiple outside influences negatively impacting the U.S. craft beer industry from COVID-19 to inflation all leading up to increased prices for consumers. However, to date, research has not investigated consumer sentiment toward increased prices and their willingness to continue paying increased prices for beer from various outlets. The current study provides an initial assessment of craft beer consumers’ purchase behaviors for on(own)- and off-premise consumption given the impacts of COVID-19 and the recent economic situation. Past research has indicated that increased prices tend to lead to decreased purchases of beer (and alcohol in general). Results of the current online survey of craft beer drinkers mostly align with past findings, as nearly half of the 350 participants in this study indicated that they had decreased their consumption of craft beer away from home. Relatedly, respondents indicated a relatively low willingness to pay price increases for craft beer consumed on-premise (own-premise) or off-premise. Full article

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is a technique that relies on detecting forces at the nanonewton scale. It involves using a cantilever with a tiny tip at one end. This tip interacts with the short- and long-range forces of material surfaces. These cantilevers are typically manufactured with Si or Si3N4 and synthesized using a lithography technique, which implies a high cost. On the other hand, through simple chemical methods, it is possible to synthesize a magneto-dielectric composite made up of artificial SiO2 opals infiltrated with superparamagnetic nanoparticles of Fe3O4. From these materials, it is possible to obtain tipless cantilevers that can be used in AFM analysis. Tipless cantilevers are an alternative tool in nanoscale exploration, offering a versatile approach to surface analysis. Unlike traditional AFM probes, tipless versions eliminate the challenges associated with tip wear, ensuring prolonged stability during measurements. This makes tipless AFM particularly valuable for imaging delicate or soft samples, as it prevents sample damage and provides precise measurements of topography and mechanical and electromechanical properties. This study presents the results of the characterization of known surfaces using magneto-dielectric cantilevers and commercial cantilevers based on Si. Structural health monitoring (SHM) is crucial for maintaining concrete infrastructure. The data collected by these sensors are processed and analyzed using various analysis tools under different loadings and exposure to external conditions. Sensor-based investigation on concrete has been carried out for technologies used for designing structural health monitoring sensors. A Sensor-Infused Structural Analysis such as interfacial bond-slip model, corroded steel bar, fiber-optic sensors, carbon black and polypropylene fiber, concrete cracks, concrete carbonation, strain transfer model, and vibrational-based monitor. The compressive strength (CS) and split tensile strength (STS) values of the analyzed material fall within a range from 26 to 36 MPa and from 2 to 3 MPa, respectively. The material being studied has a range of flexural strength (FS) and density values that fall between 4.5 and 7 MPa and between 2250 and 2550 kg/m3. The average squared difference between the predicted and actual compressive strength values was found to be 4.405. With cement ratios of 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5, the shear strength value ranged from 4.4 to 5.6 MPa. The maximum shear strength was observed for a water–cement ratio of 0.4, with 5.5 MPa, followed by a water–cement ratio of 0.3, with 5 MPa. Optimizing the water–cement ratio achieves robust concrete (at 0.50), while a lower ratio may hinder strength (at 0.30). PZT sensors and stress-wave measurements aid in the precise structural monitoring, enhanced by steel fibers and carbon black, for improved sensitivity and mechanical properties. These findings incorporate a wide range of applications, including crack detection; strain and deformation analysis; and monitoring of temperature, moisture, and corrosion. This review pioneers sensor technology for concrete monitoring (Goal 9), urban safety (Goal 11), climate resilience (Goal 13), coastal preservation (Goal 14), and habitat protection (Goal 15) of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Maternal immune activation (MIA) is a risk factor for multiple neurodevelopmental disorders; however, animal models developed to explore MIA mechanisms are sensitive to experimental factors, which has led to complexity in previous reports of the MIA phenotype. We sought to characterize an MIA protocol throughout development to understand how prenatal immune insult alters the trajectory of important neurodevelopmental processes, including the microglial regulation of synaptic spines and complement signaling. We used polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid (polyI:C) to induce MIA on gestational day 9.5 in CD-1 mice, and measured their synaptic spine density, microglial synaptic pruning, and complement protein expression. We found reduced dendritic spine density in the somatosensory cortex starting at 3-weeks-of-age with requisite increases in microglial synaptic pruning and phagocytosis, suggesting spine density loss was caused by increased microglial synaptic pruning. Additionally, we showed dysregulation in complement protein expression persisting into adulthood. Our findings highlight disruptions in the prenatal environment leading to alterations in multiple dynamic processes through to postnatal development. This could potentially suggest developmental time points during which synaptic processes could be measured as risk factors or targeted with therapeutics for neurodevelopmental disorders. Full article

This review focuses on recent advances in concrete durability using graphene oxide (GO) as a nanomaterial additive, with a goal to fill the gap between concrete technology, chemical interactions, and concrete durability, whilst providing insights for the adaptation of GO as an additive in concrete construction. An overview of concrete durability applications, key durability failure mechanisms of concrete, transportation mechanisms, chemical reactions involved in compromising durability, and the chemical alterations within a concrete system are discussed to understand how they impact the overall durability of concrete. The existing literature on the durability and chemical resistance of GO-reinforced concrete and mortar was reviewed and summarized. The impacts of nano-additives on the durability of concrete and its mechanisms are thoroughly discussed, particularly focusing on GO as the primary nanomaterial and its impact on durability. Finally, research gaps, future recommendations, and challenges related to the durability of mass-scale GO applications are presented. Full article

Research has identified principal leadership as one of the most salient school-level predictors of teacher retention. However, the survey-based quantitative nature and specific survey questions used in this research make it difficult to discern which leadership behaviors or approaches contribute most to teacher retention. As a result, school leaders and those responsible for preparing and/or employing them lack clear, research-based information about specific practices that could be effectively utilized, particularly in high-poverty schools. This qualitative case study, set in a high-poverty U. S. elementary school with high retention rates, utilized Simon and Johnson’s (2015) framework of how principal behaviors that increase teacher retention in the quantitative research are exhibited in under-resourced schools. The study generates qualitative understandings of how a principal’s actions contributed to retention by reaffirming a mission to serve high-poverty students, recognizing teachers for their work, developing and fostering within-faculty relationships, strengthening relationships with families, and providing disciplinary support. In doing so, the study also provides support for an existing framework for leading for retention and insights into how these actions may influence or be seen in survey responses used in survey-based research. Corneal neovascularization can impair vision and result in a poor quality of life. The pathogenesis involves a complex interplay of angiogenic factors, notably vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). This review provides a comprehensive overview of potential therapies for corneal neovascularization, covering tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs), transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) inhibitors, interleukin-1L receptor antagonist (IL-1 Ra), nitric oxide synthase (NOS) isoforms, galectin-3 inhibitors, retinal pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) receptor inhibitors, and surgical treatments. Conventional treatments include anti-VEGF therapy and laser interventions, while emerging therapies such as immunosuppressive drugs (cyclosporine and rapamycin) have been explored. Losartan and decorin are potential antifibrotic agents that mitigate TGF-β-induced fibrosis. Ocular nanosystems are innovative drug-delivery platforms that facilitate the targeted release of therapeutic agents. Gene therapies, such as small interfering RNA and antisense oligonucleotides, are promising approaches for selectively inhibiting angiogenesis-related gene expression. Aganirsen is efficacious in reducing the corneal neovascularization area without significant adverse effects. These multifaceted approaches underscore the corneal neovascularization management complexity and highlight ideas for enhancing therapeutic outcomes. Furthermore, the importance of combination therapies and the need for further research to develop specific inhibitors while considering their therapeutic efficacy and potential adverse effects are discussed. Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the dependence of Intravoxel Incoherent Motion (IVIM) parameters measured in the human calf on B0. Methods: Diffusion-weighted image data of eight healthy volunteers were acquired using five b-values (0–600 s/mm2) at rest and after muscle activation at 0.55 and 7 T. The musculus gastrocnemius mediale (GM, activated) was assessed. The perfusion fraction f and diffusion coefficient D were determined using segmented fits. The dependence on field strength was assessed using Student’s t-test for paired samples and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. A biophysical model built on the three non-exchanging compartments of muscle, venous blood, and arterial blood was used to interpret the data using literature relaxation times. Results: The measured perfusion fraction of the GM was significantly lower at 7 T, both for the baseline measurement and after muscle activation. For 0.55 and 7 T, the mean f values were 7.59% and 3.63% at rest, and 14.03% and 6.92% after activation, respectively. The biophysical model estimations for the mean proton-density-weighted perfusion fraction were 3.37% and 6.50% for the non-activated and activated states, respectively. Conclusions: B0 may have a significant effect on the measured IVIM parameters. The blood relaxation times suggest that 7 T IVIM may be arterial-weighted whereas 0.55 T IVIM may exhibit an approximately equal weighting of arterial and venous blood. Full article

Non-symbiotic diazotrophic microbes are important contributors to global N budgets in cereal crops. Knowledge of the biogeography of the organisms in this functional guild increases our understanding of biological N fixation in diverse locations and climates. Here, we describe the diazotrophic community in the previously unstudied, extensive ricefields of southeast Missouri, using restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis and sequencing of nifH gene clones. While nine RFLP patterns were observed in random nifH clones, these groups were not all supported by gene sequencing, suggesting that the RFLP of nifH genes alone is not suitable for describing diazotrophic guilds. Dozens of nifH clones from Missouri ricefield soils were sequenced and analyzed phylogenetically. The nifH genes detected were predominantly from Geobacteraceae, most closely related to Geobacter and Geomonas species. There were substantial clusters of nifH clones most closely related to Desulfovibrionales and other Proteobacteria. Many of the clones did not closely cluster with nifH sequences from known isolates or clades. No cyanobacterial or archaeal sequences were detected in the Missouri ricefield soils. The microbial guild fixing N appeared to be rich in anaerobes and lithotrophs. Organisms in Geobacter and Geomonas seem to be cosmopolitan, but endemism was evident, since nifH clones were recovered that formed clusters not previously reported from ricefields in other locations. The Revised Cardiac Risk Index (RCRI) and the American College of Surgeons (ACS) National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) preoperative risk assessment tools are the most widely used methods for quantifying the risk of major negative perioperative cardiac outcomes that a patient may face during and after noncardiac surgery. However, these tools were created to include as wide a range of surgical factors as possible; thus, some predictive accuracy is sacrificed when it comes to certain surgical subpopulations. In this review, we explore the various surgical oncology patient populations for whom these assessment tools can be reliably applied and for whom they demonstrate poor reliability. Full article

Pre-Infection Nutritional Status, Oxidative Stress, and One-Year-Long COVID Persistence in Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis: A Prospective Cohort Study

Background: Nutritional status’s role in long COVID is evident in the general population, yet unexplored in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD), posing a research gap. We hypothesized that pre-infection undernutrition in HD patients might impact long COVID persistence by accelerating oxidative stress. The present study aimed to investigate the association between pre-infection nutritional status, oxidative stress, and one-year-long COVID persistence in HD patients. Methods: This prospective observational cohort study enrolled 115 HD patients with confirmed COVID-19. Nutritional status was assessed using the Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score twice: before infection and three months post-infection. Oxidative markers included malondialdehyde (MDAs), ceruloplasmin, transferrin, and sulfhydryl groups. The endpoint was one-year-long COVID persistence. Results: Moderate pre-infection CONUT scores were associated with heightened severe undernutrition risk (p < 0.0001), elevated MDAs (p < 0.0001), and reduced ceruloplasmin levels (p = 0.0009) at three months post-COVID-19 compared to light CONUT scores. Pre-infection CONUT score independently predicted post-COVID oxidative damage [OR 2.3 (95% CI 1.2; 4.6), p < 0.0001] and one-year-long COVID persistence [HR 4.6 (95% CI 1.4; 9.9), p < 0.0001], even after adjusting for potential confounders. Conclusion: Moderate pre-infection undernutrition heightens post-COVID oxidative stress and increases the risk of one-year-long COVID persistence in HD patients. Full article

Adolescents and young adults (AYAs; 15–39 years) diagnosed with cancer have unique medical and psychosocial needs. These needs could be better addressed through research that is focused on the topics that matter most to them. However, there is currently no patient-oriented research agenda for AYA cancer in Canada. This manuscript describes the early development and project protocol for a priority-setting partnership (PSP) for establishing the top 10 research priorities for AYA cancer in Canada. This project follows the PSP methodology outlined by the James Lind Alliance (JLA) to engage patients, caregivers, and clinicians in research prioritization. The steps of a JLA PSP include establishing a steering group and project partners, gathering uncertainties, data processing and verifying uncertainties, interim priority setting, and a final priority setting workshop. The AYA cancer PSP will result in a top 10 list of research priorities identified by Canadian AYA patients, caregivers, and clinicians that will be published and shared broadly with the research community. The first steering group meeting was held in April 2023, and the project is ongoing. The establishment of a patient-oriented research agenda for AYA cancer will catalyze a long-term and impactful research focus and ultimately improve outcomes for AYA patients with cancer in Canada. To reduce anemia among adolescent girls, factors that influence the consumption of iron-rich foods/IRF have not been investigated, and neither has a tool been developed to assess its determinants. Using the extended version of the theory of planned behaviour/eTPB, this study aims to develop and validate a questionnaire assessing individual and environmental factors that could influence IRF intake among Senegalese adolescent girls aged 10–19 years old. First, eight focus group discussions (FGDs) were held in different regions to identify salient beliefs related to each of the four constructs of the eTPB. Information from FGDs was used to develop a questionnaire that was administered to the first group (n = 200) of girls. Principal component and exploratory factorial analyses were then performed to identify latent factors for each construct. A modified version of the tool was administered to the second sample of girls (n = 400), and confirmatory factorial analyses were conducted. Hancock and Muller’s H reliability index was computed on the final model. Most metrics for fit indices were respected, and the H value was satisfactory. This study proposes a tool that could be used to explore determinants of the consumption of IRF among adolescent girls. Full article

Fibroepithelial polyps of the anus (FEPA) are a common benign polypoid proliferation of the stroma covered by squamous epithelium. They are also an often-overlooked part of pathological practice. Currently, immunohistochemistry (IHC) for p16 is the only recommended test for anal intraepithelial neoplasia, but the expression of p16 in stromal multinucleated atypical cells in FEPA has not been described. We aimed to evaluate the expression of p16 in stromal multinucleated atypical cells in FEPA and its role as a diagnostic biomarker to determine the origin of the atypical multinucleated cells in the stroma of FEPA and to rule out the possibility of a neoplastic process. Therefore, we researched a series of 15 FEPA in middle-aged patients histologically and by IHC. Examination of the subepithelial connective tissue from the FEPA showed bizarre, multinucleated cells, while their causal relationship with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection was rejected. In all cases, these cells showed mild to moderate atypical nuclear features and positive expression for p16, while the overlying squamous epithelium was negative. We concluded that FEPA are benign lesions in the stroma where mononuclear and multinucleated (sometimes atypical) cells showing fibroblastic and myofibroblastic differentiation can be found. Nevertheless, we believe that these cells have a practical diagnostic significance, although sometimes the presence of giant cells is difficult to establish, especially in the inflammatory context. The histological similarity between FEPA and normal anal mucosa supports the hypothesis that FEPA may represent the reactive hyperplasia of subepithelial fibrous connective tissue of the anal mucosa. Background: Accurate malaria diagnosis constitutes a challenging task, necessitating the need for the implementation of targeted and effective diagnostic tools. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effectiveness of two different molecular methodologies in terms of sensitivity for the detection of External Quality Assessment (EQA) Plasmodium samples. Methods: A total of 104 lyophilized blood samples from 14 different UK-NEQAS (National External Quality Assessment Site) (2016–2021) and eight WHO-NEQAS distributions (2017–2020) were analyzed. An in-house multiplex PCR protocol, followed by single target real-time PCR protocols for all five Plasmodium species, was implemented. Results: The multiplex PCR had a success rate of 10/16 and 20/28 for P. vivax and P. falciparum species, respectively. On the other hand, the respective results for real-time PCR had a success rate of 13/16 (P. vivax), 28/28 (P. falciparum), 5/8 (P. malariae), 8/10 (P. ovale), and 10/14 (P. knowlesi). Plasmodium falciparum samples displayed the highest sensitivity of detection, 0.02 parasites/μL. Plasmodium vivax samples displayed a 0.1 parasites/μL cutoff value, greater than the respective value for whole blood samples, while P. ovale species displayed a respective cutoff value of 0.05 parasites/μL. Due to the limited number of tested samples, data obtained for P. malariae and P. knowlesi species samples were inconclusive. Conclusions: Real-time PCR comprises a credible molecular methodology in terms of sensitivity assessment and detection of low parasitemia levels of Plasmodium sp. in EQA lyophilized blood samples. Background: The escalating prevalence of obesity in women of reproductive age raises concerns about its impact on maternal and fetal health during pregnancy. This study aimed to thoroughly assess how obesity affects pregnancy and neonatal outcomes among Saudi pregnant women. Methods: In a retrospective cross-sectional study, we analyzed 8426 pregnant women who delivered at King Fahad National Guard Hospital in Riyadh in 2021. Of these, 3416 had obesity, and 341 of them, meeting the inclusion criteria, were selected. Maternal and neonatal outcomes were compiled using a structured questionnaire and extracted from the hospital’s “Best Care” data-based registration system. Results: The findings highlighted that 40.5% of pregnant women were classified as obese, with almost half falling into obesity class II based on BMI. Obesity correlated significantly with adverse maternal outcomes like gestational diabetes and increased rates of cesarean deliveries. Additionally, maternal obesity was linked to unfavorable fetal outcomes, including higher rates of newborn intensive care unit admissions, lower APGAR scores at 1 min, and a greater likelihood of macrosomia. Conclusions: This study underscores the important impact of maternal obesity on both maternal and fetal health during pregnancy. Addressing this high-risk condition demands targeted educational programs for women of reproductive age focusing on BMI control, dietary adjustments, and lifestyle modifications to mitigate obesity-related complications during pregnancy. Background: Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a delayed hypersensitivity reaction occurring in sensitized individuals due to exposure to allergens. Polysensitization, defined as positive reactions to multiple unrelated haptens, increases the risk of ACD development and affects patients’ quality of life. The aim of this study is to apply machine learning in order to analyze the association between ACD, polysensitization, individual susceptibility, and patients’ characteristics. Methods: Patch test results and demographics from 400 ACD patients (Study protocol Nr. 3765/2022), categorized as polysensitized or monosensitized, were analyzed. Classic statistical analysis and multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) were utilized to explore relationships among variables. Results: The findings revealed significant associations between patient characteristics and ACD patterns, with hand dermatitis showing the strongest correlation. MCA provided insights into the complex interplay of demographic and clinical factors influencing ACD prevalence. Conclusion: Overall, this study highlights the potential of machine learning in unveiling hidden patterns within dermatological data, paving the way for future advancements in the field. Full article

Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) poses treatment challenges, with treatment response and disease outcome often determined by the immune response, particularly mononuclear phagocytes. Monocytes can differentiate into various subpopulations influenced by AHR. Statins, known for inflammation modulation, may impact monocyte function via AHR activation. This study explored rosuvastatin (RSV)’s effects on monocyte subtypes, inflammatory markers, and AHR in CHB patients. Fifteen CHB patients were randomly assigned to receive either 20 mg RSV or a placebo daily for three months. Flow cytometry assessed CD14+ CD16− (classical), CD14+ CD16+ (intermediate), and CD14dim CD16+ (patrolling) monocyte subtypes, along with AHR levels in each subset. ELISA quantified cytokines IL-6, IFN-γ, IL-12, IL-10, TNF-α, TGF-β, and IL-1β. RSV expanded CD14+ CD16− classical and reduced CD14+ CD16+ intermediate monocytes in CHB patients while increasing AHR+ cell percentages in all subsets. RSV treatment upregulated key AHR target genes (Cyp1a1, Cyp1b1, and ARNT), indicating robust AHR signaling activation. It also reduced pro-inflammatory cytokine levels (IL-6, IFNγ, IL-12, TNF-α) and elevated anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10, TGF-β). Thus, RSV may modulate the immune response by altering monocyte subtypes in CHB patients via AHR activation. Full article

X-ray fluorescence (XRF) core scanners are commonly used for fine-scale geochemical analysis in sediment studies, but data are semi-quantitative and require calibration to convert geochemical element counts to concentrations. Application of XRF core scanning in soil science remains largely untapped. This study employed an ITRAX core scanner to scan grassland soil cores and developed a novel calibration method based on a chemometric approach to characterise soil geochemistry. As soil samples are collected based on depth sampling, this study investigated whether higher resolution element concentrations could be inferred from lower resolution reference samples and if regression models from multiple cores could apply to a new core at the same resolution. Reference concentrations were obtained for all cores at 10 cm intervals, with validation conducted at 1 cm for a single core. Two calibration curve types were proposed: one based on the single core’s 10 cm data to validate references at 1 cm intervals; and another using all cores, with each core serving as a test item after exclusion from the training set. Various preprocessing measures and feature selection techniques were tested. Results showed successful calibration for elements Ca, P, Zn, Sr, and S, with high R2 values of 0.94, 0.93, 0.93, 0.92 and 0.91, respectively. The study presents a novel method for calibrating XRF core scanning element counts, demonstrating its potential for high-resolution soil analysis. Full article

Background and Objectives: Mutations in succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) and fumarate hydratase (FH) give rise to various familial cancer syndromes, with these alterations being characteristic of certain types of histomorphologically specific leiomyomas that hold significant predictive value. Materials and Methods: This study presents two cases of uterine leiomyomas exhibiting rare histomorphological and genetic characteristics, which are crucial for prognosis and further treatment. Results: Distinct histopathological features such as marked nuclear atypia, intracellular eosinophilic globules, and abnormal intratumoral vessels raise suspicion for specific leiomyoma subtypes, which carry predictive significance for additional hereditary cancer syndromes. Immunohistochemical analysis confirmed FH/SDH deficiency in both patients, who underwent careful follow-up. Conclusions: This study describes two cases involving unusual leiomyomas, the histopathological characteristics of which may easily go unrecognized. These features hold predictive significance because their specific mutations point to additional hereditary cancer syndromes, highlighting the need for further examinations. Full article

Anticoagulant and antiplatelet therapies are used to prevent life-threatening complications associated with thrombosis. While there are numerous clinical guidelines for antithrombotic medications, there is an incomplete understanding of whether these interventions yield similar effects in preclinical models, potentially impacting their predictive value for translational studies on the development of medical devices, therapies, and surgical techniques. Due to their close physiologic similarities to humans, we employed nonhuman primates (NHPs) using a reverse translational approach to analyze the response to clinical regimens of unfractionated heparin, low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) and aspirin to assess concordance with typical human responses and evaluate the predictive validity of this model. We evaluate activated clotting time (ACT) in nine rhesus and six cynomolgus macaques following the intraoperative administration of intravenous unfractionated heparin (100–300 U/kg) reflecting the clinical dose range. We observed a significant dose-dependent effect of heparin on ACT (low-dose average = 114.1 s; high-dose average = 148.3 s; p = 0.0011). LMWH and aspirin, common clinical antithrombotic prophylactics, were evaluated in three rhesus macaques. NHPs achieved therapeutic Anti-Xa levels (mean = 0.64 U/mL) and ARU (mean = 459) via VerifyNow, adhering to clinical guidance using 1.0 mg/kg enoxaparin and 81 mg aspirin. Clinical dosing strategies for unfractionated heparin, LMWH, and aspirin were safe and effective in NHPs, with no development of thrombosis or bleeding complications intraoperatively, postoperatively, or for prophylaxis. Our findings suggest that coagulation studies, performed as an integrative part of studies on biologics, bioengineered devices, or transplantation in NHPs, can be extrapolated to the clinical situation with high predictive validity.
