This book looks at the disaster area after the television crews and press reporters have left the scene. It investigates the how and why of international aid. How it was used and why it was used in that manner and the effect it had on the survivors. International aid is often welcome but it can bring a dependence in its wake. International aid is often brief and seldom sustained (there are other disasters following that also require aid).

The book draws upon the extensive field experience and research; the authors offer a detailed analysis of two major recent events, hurricanes Gilbert in 1988 and Hugo in 1989.

The authors show how economic aid can be used to help develop a sustainable aftermath and recovery period. They offer suggestions as to how aid can be utilised to help promote long term economic benefit for the affected regions which would help them to cope with future catastrophic events.

A well written and researched text with many good ideas. A “must read” for those who provide the economic aid in the event of such disastrous events.
