For anyone concerned about this hazard, the NDMC site deserves serious scrutiny; see, for example, The Enigma of Drought: Science and Impacts at the second URL above.
From the same location, the Western Drought Coordination Council provides information about its ongoing work as well as a quarterly report, Western Climate and Water Status, which synthesizes 75 different data sources regarding the western US water/ drought outlook.
