Abstract

Abstract The diffuse reflectance spectrum of powdered γ-Ni2SiO4 (synthetic spinel) grown from single-crystal olivine at high pressure and high temperature was recorded at room conditions. The absorption bands were fitted using Gaussian components to derive the position of the optical transitions. One supplementary absorption band was found at high energy as compared to the previous studies of the same compound. The assignment of the bands has been reinvestigated from these new data taking into account the splitting of the optical terms induced by the D3d distortion of the spinel octahedral site. Derived values for the crystal field (Δo) and Racah parameter (B) are 8910 and 860 cm-1, respectively.
