Abstract
A cored borehole at Ormesby St. Margaret (TG 5148 1424) Norfolk, England, has revealed 70 metres of Late Palaeocene sediments. They comprise a sequence of green clays and silts, overlain unconformably by carbonaceous mudstones and tuffs, which can be correlated confidently with the Lista, Sele and Balder formations of the Central North Sea. Micropalaeontology and palaeomagnetism have enabled their correlation with the sequences in the London Basin, establishing the Ormesby sequence as including at its base the oldest Palaeocene sediments yet recorded onshore.
