Electron Microscopy (1962), suggest that the movement of multivesicular bodies (their “specialized sites on the cell surface for protein, uptake”) from the cell surface to the developing yolk granules constitutes circumstantial evidence that this is the form in which yolk proteins are carried from the circulation to the yolk granule. In this connexion we have noted that the surface sheet of vesicles of the multivesicular body are usually stripped off before this body joins the yolk granule. However, the vesicular nature of the internal sheet and the centrally located granules (Figs. 1, 2) suggest that at least this layer is also not made up of yolk proteins. It is possible that a major function of the stripped multi-vesicular bodies is to provide nucleic acids to the yolk granules (these are known to be present therein) but this question (and the question of yolk protein transport by these bodies) is yet to be resolved.
