Abstract
A RECENT report by Zachman and Olson1 described the formation of acidic water-soluble metabolites from vitamin A (retinol) and vitamin A acid (retinoic acid) by perfused rat liver. We have isolated an acidic metabolite, with potent vitamin A-like activity, from both retinol and retinoic acid. No compound metabolically related to retinol or retinoic acid with growth-promoting activity has hitherto been described.
