Abstract
WE have recently reported that explant cultures of rat anterior pituitary liberate considerable quantities of prolactin into synthetic culture media1. Anterior pituitaries from lactating rats produced more prolactin than glands from mature non-lactating females, and prolactin production by anterior pituitaries of mature females was greater than that of immature female rats. Œstrogen increased prolactin production in vitro, presumably by a direct action on the anterior pituitary cells2. Since prolactin secretion in vitro was obtained so readily with rat anterior pituitary, it was decided to examine the glands from a number of other species to determine if they would also produce detectable quantities of prolactin in vitro.
