Electron Microscopy of Crystal Lattices : an Anomalous Effect

Abstract

AN explanation of intensity modulations in electron micrographs of crystal lattices1 has recently been given by Labaw2, and Hashimoto, Naiki and Mannami3 have published a theoretical interpretation of fringe separation modifications which occur when a Bragg extinction contour lies in the same direction as the crystal ‘lattice planes’ resolved. The present communication deals with the conditions which exist when a Bragg extinction contour lies across the lattice planes in question. A theory given by Cowley and Moodie4 is used to interpret a phenomenon which has recently been observed in practice (see Fig. 1).
