Congress “Climate Change: Global Risks, Challenges and Decisions”

10-12 March 2009, Copenhagen, Denmark

The University of Copenhagen is hosting an international scientific congress on climate change under the heading “Climate Change: Global Risks, Challenges and Decisions”, 10-12 March 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The congress is organised in cooperation with nine other universities in the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU).

The main aim of the congress is to provide a synthesis of existing and emerging scientific knowledge necessary in order to make intelligent societal decisions concerning application of mitigation and adaptation strategies in response to climate change. The congress aims to identify and synthesise the science, technology and policy advances required in order to ensure sustainability of global communities in the current and coming decades.

The findings of the congress will be supplementary to the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The congress will provide a summary of existing scientific knowledge two years after the last IPCC report. Further details are available at: http://climatecongress.ku.dk/

Annual Conference of the Association of American Geographers

22-27 March 2009, Las Vegas, USA

Given colliding global challenges such as climate change, food crises, increasing urbanisation, economic downturns and rising energy prices, there is an increasing need to consider how to define and create local, sustainable communities. The Association of American Geographers welcome delegates to their Annual Conference, to be held in Las Vegas in Spring 2009. The theme of the conference is “Building Sustainable Communities”. Submissions should address specific themes in the context of sustainable communities including but not exclusive to: urban planning; climate change; food systems; social enterprises; animal welfare; social justice including social inclusion and exclusion, gender, the ethics of care, and labour; new urban-rural interfaces and networks; and environmental welfare issues. World Business Summit on Climate Change-delivering recommendations to a new climate treaty

24-26 May 2009, Copenhagen, Denmark

Climate change, typically viewed as a threat, also presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to lead the next industrial revolution as the world shifts to a low-carbon economy. At the World Business Summit on Climate Change, the Copenhagen Climate Council and the world’s foremost low-carbon pioneers will take the lead in kick-starting this industrial revolution. The Summit’s ambition is to demonstrate clearly that climate change is not just a risk and a challenge to humanity, but also a significant opportunity to create innovative solutions and new ventures that may result in better quality of life for millions of people across the world.

The Summit will bring together business leaders with the world’s top scientists, economists, civil society, media leaders, politicians and other thought leaders to show how business can help solve the climate crisis through innovative business models, new partnerships and the development of low-carbon technologies. The Summit will send a strong message to the 2009 UN Climate Change Conference (COP15) on how to remove barriers and create incentives for implementation of new solutions in a post-Kyoto framework. International Conference on Human Ecology

30 June-3 July 2009, Manchester, UK

This Conference, under the theme “Human ecology for an urbanising world” will examine the status of, and current challenges facing, human ecology around the world. It aims to bring together scholars and practitioners associated with the study and practice of human ecology to demonstrate the relevance of the discipline, and its philosophy and applications, for the contemporary environment and for society. The continued growth of cities and the increasing rates of consumption of hundreds of millions of urban people are continuing to have impacts far beyond urban areas themselves. The transformation of the earth’s surface, atmosphere and waters is both modifying ecosystems and changing societies. The resolution of the many problems that these transformations create requires the holistic, integrative approach to the earth as the home of humankind that human ecology fosters and promotes. This conference aims to bring together the diverse perspectives embraced by the wide range of approaches to these problems and to produce new ideas and practical suggestions for improving the efforts being made to improve people’s lives and to better care for the planet.

Global Conference on Global Warming

5-9 July 2009, Istanbul, Turkey

Further to the success of previous events, the Global Conference on Global Warming will be held in Istanbul, Turkey on 5-9 July 2009. The primary themes of the conference are global warming and climate change, not only in engineering and science but also in all other disciplines (e.g. ecology, education, social sciences, economics, management, political sciences, and information technology). The event covers a broad range of topics on energy and environment policies, energy resources, energy conversion technologies, energy management and conservation, energy security, renewables, green technologies, emission reduction and abatement, carbon tax, sustainable development, pollution control and measures, policy development, etc. Therefore, papers on related topics are solicited from all relevant disciplinary areas, ranging from current problems, projections, new concepts, modeling, experiments and measurements, to simulations. 3rd European Fair on Education for Sustainable Development

28-30 October 2009, Hamburg, Germany

Under the theme “Renewable Energy and Climate Change: Thematic Challenges to European Schools and Universities”, the 3rd European Fair on Education for Sustainable Development, is being organised by the Research and Transfer Centre “Applications of Life Sciences” of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences and the Centre for Sustainable Construction (ZzB) Hamburg, under the auspices of the RCE Hamburg and Region. The RCE Hamburg and Region is part of a global network of Regional Centres of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development (RCEs) coordinated by the United Nations University.

The aims of the 3rd European Fair on Education for Sustainable Development are threefold to:

  • provide European organisations with an opportunity to display and present their works (i.e. policies research, activities, practical projects) as they relate to education for, with and about the environment with a focus on renewable energy and climate issues;

  • foster the exchange of information, ideas and experiences acquired in the execution of projects, from successful initiatives and good practice;

  • discuss methodological approaches and projects which aim to integrate the topic of renewable energy and climate change in the curriculum of schools and universities; and

  • introduce the European RCEs and discuss their activities in the field of renewable energy and climate change, as well as explore possibilities for cooperation.

Last but not least, a further aim of the event will be to link and network people and organisations working in the field so that they can use renewable energy as one of the tools towards tackling the challenges of climate change. Further details are available at: www.eufair.eu/
