When a physics text is reprinted after nearly 30 years, in a subject where new works proliferate, the browser may well assume that he has a 'classic' in his hands. Yet the author of this admirably unpretentious book, to which many a postwar physics student might have turned with relief from the 1930s' heavyweights — Tolman, Fowler and Guggenheim etc. — seems to have been little concerned with 'classic' status.
