Near-infrared observations of the far-infrared source V region in NGC 6334.
Abstract
The far-infrared source V (FIRS V) studied in the present investigation is located in the H II region-molecular cloud complex NGC 6334. A description is presented of near-infrared and radio spectral line observations of the FIRS V region. A region centered on FIRS V was searched at 2.2 micrometers. Several strong near-infrared sources were detected. However, with the exception of the very red source, called IRS V-1, located very close to the nominal position of FIRS V, these 2 micrometer sources could be identified with faint stars visible at the telescope. Evidence is considered which leads to the identification of IRS V-1 as the near-infrared counterpart of FIRS V. The 1-20 micrometer spectrum of IRS V-1 is similar to the near-infrared energy distributions previously observed for young OB stars embedded in massive molecular clouds.
