Abstract
Nevado-Filabride rocks beneath the pile of Higher Betic nappes in the Sierra Alhamilla, Betic Cordilleras, were plastically deformed to large strains concurrent with nappe emplacement. Shortening is subvertical, and maximum finite stretching is N--S to NE--SW. There are compatible regional decreases in flow stress and finite strain with increasing distance from the main thrusts. Mylonites and ultramylonites marking the thrusts appear to have acted as weak superplastic layers, reflecting flow stresses equal or lower than their wall rocks. The total duration of nappe-related deformation is calculated to be around four million years.
