Abstract

The P31(α, n) Cl34 reaction at 13.0 and 14.6 MeV α energies was used to investigate Cl34 levels at 4743 keV (Jπ=6), 3632 keV (Jπ=5), and 3600 keV (Jπ=4) excitation energy. Angular distribution measurements and lifetime determinations by the recoil distance method were performed. Lifetimes of 7±3, 280±60, and 23±5 ps were obtained for the 4743, 3632, and 3600 keV levels, respectively. The value of the lifetime for the 4743 keV level yields a negative parity assignment for this state. Strong E2 and E3 deduced transition strengths are related to the transition strengths deexciting quadrupole and octupole vibrations in the core nucleus S32.

NUCLEAR REACTIONS P31(α, n), Eα=13.0 and 14.6 MeV; measured σ(Eγ, θ) and RDM, deduced δ, τ, and π. Natural targets. Ge(Li) detectors.
