Abstract

Discrepancies between two published sets of Anderson Hamiltonian parameter values for mixed-valence ${YbAl}_{3}$ obtained from electron-spectroscopic studies [S.-J. Oh et al., Phys. Rev. B 37, 2861 (1988); F. Patthey et al., ibid. 36, 7697 (1987)] are discussed. It is shown that these discrepancies mainly stem from the different Yb valences of the two samples studied. It is pointed out that the parameter set which puts ${YbAl}_{3}$ in the Kondo regime is more consistent with other physical measurements such as the magnetic susceptibility and x-ray-absorption-edge spectroscopy.
