Hydrological aspects of ensuring flow-through large-capacity navigation in the tailwater of the Nizhny Novgorod (Gorky) water development are considered. Concise hydrological characteristics are presented for the reservoir of the projected Nizhny Novgorod low-head water development, one of the key objects of the water transport infrastructure of the European part of the Russian Federation, construction of which is provided for by the Federal Target Program “Development of Transport System of Russia (2010 – 2020),” the Transport Strategy of the Russian Federation for the period until 2030, and also the Strategy of Development of Inland Water Transport of the Russian Federation for the period until 2030.
