Excitation of the magnesium 2p 6 configuration in Mg+-He collisions

Abstract

Excitation to the 1s 2 2s 2 2p 5 3p configuration in Mg III has been studied with optical spectrometry in the Mg+-He collision from 15 to 75 keV. The results are discussed and compared with the theory of Barat and Lichten, which predicts no such excitation. A possible explanation by Coulomb excitation is given.
