Dr. Klaus Wallmann heads the Research Unit “Marine Geosystems” at Leibniz-Institute of Marine Sciences, IFM-GEOMAR, in Kiel, Germany. On seagoing expeditions, his work examines the input of water, methane and other volatiles into the ocean through cold seeps and mud volcanoes, the formation and dissociation of marine gas hydrates, the microbial degradation of sedimentary organic matter and the recycling of nutrients into the ocean. Using proxy records from marine carbonates and evaporite, the gradual geochemical development of both oceans and atmosphere is being assessed and reconstructed. Numerical models are used to simulate long-term changes in the earth system and particular attention is given to biogeochemical processes in marine sediments.
Dr. Jörg Bialas works as a senior scientist also at Leibniz-Institute of Marine Sciences dealing with questions on geodynamics. His research focuses on seismic and gravity analysis of structural changes with depth, on seismics, heat flow, and hydration of slab crust and mantle. Recent research interests focus on studies of gas and fluid storage in and venting through the oceanic crust. High resolution seismic analysis of mud diapirs and cold seeps has been the tool to provide the required data sets. The development and operation of new seismic acquisition systems (multichannel deep towed streamer, 3-D multichannel P-cable application) form the technical focus of recent projects.
