Abstract

We report on the spin dynamics in antiferromagnetic (TN=21 K) chromium oxide β-CaCr2O4, which has been proposed recently as a good experimental realization of a spin-3/2 strongly frustrated zigzag ladder. Inelastic neutron-scattering experiments evidence unconventional magnetic excitations, reminiscent of a spin-(pseudo)gap behavior above TN. We interpret this result as related to strong one-dimensional quantum fluctuations over a broad temperature range extending up to ~80 K. Below TN, spin dynamics are compatible with a model of weakly ferromagnetically coupled frustrated ladders.
