Magnetic monopoles and the solar neutrino problem

Abstract

The suggestion that magnetic monopoles in the solar interior could affect the expected neutrino flux, thereby solving a longstanding problem in solar physics, is investigated. Bound states of particles in the region of a monopole are calculated using several simplifying assumptions, all of which can be expected to overestimate the effect of monopoles. It is found that the monopole density in the Sun would have to be 20 orders of magnitude larger than bounds set by the solar magnetic fields in order for there to be an appreciable effect on the solar neutrino problem.
