What do yeast proteins do?

To understand how a cell works we need to know the function of every gene in its genome. Genome sequencing provides a tremendous amount of information for the development of global (so-called functional-genomic) approaches towards this goal, complementing and enhancing the more traditional (single-gene) approaches. But a challenge to functional-genomic approaches is the development of efficient interfaces between the large data sets, the reagents generated and the scientists analysing specific biological processes.

On page 413 of this issue, Ross-MacDonald et al.1 describe a new genome-wide strategy for the large-scale analysis of gene function in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This impressive work provides functional information for roughly one-third of all genes in the yeast genome, providing — on an unprecedented scale — direct access to information, mutant strains and cloned reagents for subsequent analysis by the scientific community.
