Abstract

We have shown that the effect of alternating currents (a.c.) on Na,K-ATPase varies with temperature, and that the observations can be explained by assuming a simple theoretical model of changes in the ion binding to the activation sites due to an imposed alternating electric field. Previous observations showing that the effect of an electric field on the enzyme can lead to either an enhancement or a decrease in enzyme activity, depending upon the initial activity, also appears to be true when the enzyme activity is varied by changing the temperature. This suggests very strongly that the mechanism of action of a.c. is the result of changing in ion binding and not changes in lipid phase structure.
