Abstract

A phytochemical survey of Cymophyllus fraseri revealed a flavonoid profile of 21 foliar and eight inflorescence compounds. The foliar profile was dominated by C-glycosylfiavones, the floral profile by flavone-O-glycosides. The apparent lack of flavonols and elaboration of glycoflavones suggests an advanced phylogenetic position for Cymophyllus within the Cyperaceae. Cymophyllus phytochemistry appears to reflect the phylogenetic status of its reduced inflorescence, which a number of sedge taxonomists consider advanced.
