      Difficulty in dealing with DO has been shown to cause culture crash and also has been fingered as a major factor in limiting the scaling up of closed systems [159]. The inhibitory effect of dissolved oxygen is majorly due to the competitive inhibition of photosynthesis by dioxygen (O2), as O2 competes with CO2 for the active site of Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase oxygenase (RuBisCo) [160]. At higher DO concentrations, the result is reduced biomass productivity due to the photosynthetically wasteful process of photorespiration [161].
