Abstract

By nutritional tests and by examination of the accumulation products we could subdivide several different blocked trp-mutants.

Mutants of group 1 grow either with anthranilic acid, with indole or with tryptophan. They accumulate in minimal medium chorismic acid, phenylpyruvic acid, p-hydroxyphenylpyruvic acid, 2-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-ethanol, 2-phenylethanol, p-hydroxybenzoic and small amounts of p-aminobenzoic acid.

Mutants of group 2 grow either with indole or tryptophan. They can be subdivided by their accumulation products: (a) Accumulation of anthranilic acid only. (b) Accumulation of anthranilic acid and 1-N-(o-carboxyphenylamino)-1-deoxy-d-ribulose. (c) Accumulation of anthranilic acid, two unknown derivatives of anthranilic acid and two unknown derivatives of indole.

Mutants of group 3 grow only with tryptophan. They accumulate the same products as mutants of group 2 c.
