Burr and Burr observed that with only ten drops of lard, previously affected rats could be rescued and made “entirely free from skin lesions or tail trouble.” In a subsequent manuscript published one year later, the Burrs further characterized the effects of the fat-restricted diet, including hematuria, anovulation in female rats, and lack of sex response in male rats.2,3 Critically, they demonstrated that by providing a small amount of linoleic acid, the newly discovered nutritional deficiency disease could be rapidly cured.
