Abstract

A mathematically manageable log normal approximation of a multi-nomial genetic model is developed, which takes into account those directed and random processes which control genotypic frequencies in populations consisting of mixtures of pure lines. Results based on this model agree closely with those obtained by numerical simulations performed on an electronic data processing computer. It is noted that “genotype” and “pure line” are interchangeable in the context of this paper. “Pure line” is used in many early papers, but “genotype” must be used in more general situations dealt with in the following paper. Both terms are used here in order to make easier the transition from the simple to the more complex.
