Abstract

In the study of fission reactions induced by 156 MeV protons on 209Bi and 238U, mass distributions and kinetic energy distributions of the initial fragments have been obtained, using an experimental correction for the evaporation of neutrons from the fragments.

In the first part, a comparison of the results obtained with Bi and with U has shown that 30 per cent of the fission events in U exhibit on asymmetric mass distribution. For these 30 per cent the kinetic energy characteristics are those of low-energy fission in 235U.

In a second part, we have compared successfully our results on Bi with predictions of the liquid drop model (Nix-Swiatecki spheroids) and a fairly good agreement was obtained if we used a reasonable estimation for both the mass distribution and the excitation energy distribution of polonium fissioning nuclei.
