Abstract

Existing quasiparticle wave functions for 140La and 140Ce have been used to compute the co-ordinate type β-decay matrix elements for the outer and first inner groups in 140La. The experimental data has been analyzed with these matrix elements to obtain values for the relativistic matrix element ƒα. While the exact values of the matrix elements are extremely sensitive to the amplitudes of the components in the wave functions, a comparison of the results for the two groups shows the matrix elements for the 3(β)2+ transition to be 5–10 times smaller than those for the 3(β)4+ transition. Also, the correction term to the Fujita result for Λ = ƒα/ƒr proposed by Damgaard and Winther has been calculated, but this term still does not explain the discrepancy between the theoretical value for Λ and that obtained experimentally.
