Abstract

An experiment which aims at a precise measurement of $p$ p cross sections at low momenta is presented. Its design and performance are described with emphasis on the particle identification capabilities. A calorimeter-like detector array which serves for the detection of antineutrons is discussed in some detail. Its properties were measured in a test experiment and are compared to Monte Carlo calculations.

Antinucleon-nucleon interaction at low energy: Scattering and protonium

We present nucleon–antinucleon scattering experiments performed at the Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) of CERN. The data are reviewed and the underlying physics is discussed, in particular by comparison with the predictions of current models based on meson exchange and short-range absorption. A detailed description is given of protonium, which gives information on the interaction at zero energy and is the initial state when annihilation occurs at rest.
A method for monitoring the stability of photomultipliers

A method for monitoring hundreds of photomultipliers has been developed in conjunction with the first level trigger of the pion spectrometer CHAOS being constructed at TRIUMF. The system for monitoring the photomultiplier gain stability simply consists of a xenon lamp which operates in the nanosecond time region, a light guide which diffuses the light, and bundles of optical fibers which transport the light to photocathodes. The photomultiplier gain stability can be probed up to few percent (FWHM).
