Abstract

Polyimide foils with a thickness <1 mg/cm2 are not available commercially. Pauwels et al. have developed a preparation method of thinner polyimide foils via amide-acid spreading and in situ polycondensation on glass plates. On the basis of their experience this method was extended up to a foil diameter of 37 cm with a minimum thickness of 30 μg/cm2. This was possible using a standard photoresist spin coater and applying heat treatment under vacuum for better solvent removal and polycondensation. The properties of Al- and Bi-layers on these polyimide foils were investigated.

Further efforts to improve the mechanical stability of the foils were undertaken by Van Gestel et al. [4] by increasing the polymerisation temperature and by Eykens et al. [5] by preparing the polycondensate and spreading the solution on a glass plate in a dry atmosphere while further increasing the polymerisation temperature. Additional investigations were made to prepare large area foils for special applications [6,7]. Regardless of the modifications of the in-situ polymerisation process, the standard preparation of polyimide foils consisted of three steps: the preparation of the polycondensate used to form foil by spreading the solution on a glass plate, the removal of the solvent by a thermal treatment of the covered glass plates for 4 h at 100 °C and the final polymerisation performed at a high temperature of 350 °C.

An empirical relationship between the solution concentration and the thickness of the foil produced was presented in Ref. [1]. The influence of the working area humidity on the relationship between foil thickness and the concentration of the polycondensate [3,4] was taken into consideration when preparing the solution. The mixture of the components was stirred magnetically for 4 h to assure complete dissolution of the dianhydride and diamide powders and then filtered to remove any undissolved particles.
