Abstract

The direction of Fe magnetic moments in [Fe(40 Å)/RE(30 Å)] multilayers (RE = Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) was studied by 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy at 300 K and 4.2 K. The Fe magnetic moments, which are in the film plane at 300 K, turn to the perpendicular direction at lower temperatures in the Fe/Pr, Fe/Nd, Fe/Tb, and Fe/Dy multilayers. The mechanism of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is discussed.
