Determination of reliable earthquake magnitudes by means of a homogeneous system of reference stations

Abstract

A homogeneous magnitude-estimation system (HMS) comprising 32 selected seismic stations has been established on the Eurasian continent utilising the method of successive optimisation of station corrections and calibrating functions for estimating earthquake magnitudes from PVs, PV, PH, SV, SH, LV, and LH waves. Use of the HMS method substantially improves the compatibility of magnitudes, decreases the dispersion of observations, and increases the accuracy of the network magnitude determinations. A detailed analysis of errors reveals that in seismological practice with a careful accumulation of observations, HMS network magnitudes can be estimated with an accuracy corresponding to a standard error of ±0.05 magnitude units.
