Abstract

A new gas-flow type reactor for plasma polymerization was developed to synthesize functional polymers, which enhances the reaction of radicals activated in the discharge methylmetacrylate, α-methylstyrene and styrene were used for polymerization. From the study of molecular structure and molecular weight distribution, a model of plasma polymerization was proposed suggesting that the dimer was formed in the gas phase and polymerized on the substrate. The molecular weight was increased under the irradiation of discharge radiation and high-energy particles from the discharge.
