Abstract

The nuclear magnetic resonance (N.M.R.) line in a single crystal of tellurium presents a large and strongly anisotropic shift. The N.M.R. spectrum has one, two or three lines depending upon the orientation of the single crystal with respect to the direction of the applied magnetic field. We have been able to determine directly the anisotropic part of the chemical shift tensor and its principal axes. The directions of these axes are given relative to the crystallographic axes. The results are discussed in connection with the crystal symmetries of tellurium.
