Abstract

The incommensurate magnetic structure of TbAsO4 has been studied down to 0.4 K by neutron diffraction on a polycrystalline sample. Using newly developed profile fitting techniques the magnetic diffraction peaks at 0.4 K were analyzed as groups of strongly overlapping satellite reflections. As a consequence a propagation vector τ = [0.041, 0.075, 0.018] has been deduced, with the magnetic moments of Tb lying in the ab-plane. The powder diffraction data do not allow us to distinguish between a flat spiral structure (μ = 7.1 μB) and a uniaxial, sine-modulated structure (μmax = 9.9 μB). The propagation vector does not vary with temperature between 0.4 and 1.5 K, the region covered in this experiment.
