Observation of the intrinsic magneto-optical effect of the antiferromagnetic ordered state

Abstract

With the onset of a magnetic ordering, an additional contribution to optical birefringence was observed below TN in RbNiCl3. From magnetic symmetry considerations, this phenomenon is identified with the birefringence intrinsic to the antiferromagnetic spin structure giving rise to magnetoelectric effects.
