Abstract

Specific heat measurements on Ce4Bi3 at low temperature were carried out in various magnetic fields, and the phase diagram with dHc/dT > 0 was determined. A large linear specific heat coefficient, γ = 200 mJ/K2mol Ce was obtained at H = 0. The entropy at the phase transition temperature is only 40% of ln 2. The ordered anisotropy in magnetization cannot be explained by a simple crystalline field model.

Various anomalous properties suggest competition between the Kondo and ferromagnetic interaction in Ce4Bi3.
