Abstract

Magnetic susceptibility, LIII absorption and lattice parameter measurements indicate that Tm valence changes from 3+ to mixed valence with decreasing y in Tm1−yYbyB6, whereas mixed valence seems to persist even to the single impurity limit in Tm1−xLaxB6. These results are compared with experimental one on Sm in the isomorphous alloys.

  • Different valence states of Tm in YB<inf>6</inf> and YbB<inf>6</inf>

    Citation Excerpt :

The Tm valence of La1-xTmxB6 is nearly 2.6 independent of the Tm concentration x, while that of Yb1-xTmxB6 is close to 3 and gets slightly smaller with x; decreasing from 2.9 for x = 0.24 to 2.8 for x = 0.49. The x-dependences of the lattice constants of La1-xTmxB6 and Yb1-xTmxB6 in Fig. 1 of Ref. [5] seem to suggest that TmB6 would be a valence fluctuation compound. In this paper, we report the Tm valence states in Y1-xTmxB6 (x = 0.25) and Yb1-xTmxB6 (x = 0.2), determined by hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) probing the Tm 3d core state.
