2020, Marine ChemistryCitation Excerpt :Within the North Atlantic realm, the coastal areas of the North Sea exhibit highest Mndiss concentrations, which further increase towards the mainland indicating nearshore sources (Kremling, 1983; Kremling and Hydes, 1988; Tappin et al., 1995; Shiller, 1997; Dellwig et al., 2007a, 2007b). However, in addition to several rivers (Rhine, Ems, Weser, and Elbe) discharging into the North Sea (Duinker et al., 1979, 1982a, 1982b; Turner et al., 1992), the quantity of the Mn input from the Wadden Sea is unknown. First attempts to estimate the importance of the Wadden Sea as a trace metal, nutrient, and methane source were exemplarily conducted in the Spiekeroog tidal basin and were extrapolated to a larger part of the Wadden Sea (Beck et al., 2008c; Grunwald et al., 2010).
Spatial variability of arsenic speciation in the Gironde Estuary: Emphasis on dynamic (potentially bioavailable) inorganic arsenite and arsenate fractions
2020, Marine ChemistryCitation Excerpt :Non conservative behaviour (addition) was observed for Mndiss in both fractions and to a lesser extent for Fediss 0.2 in the upper estuary (1 < S < 5) as well as in the downstream estuary (S > 15). Addition of Mn at S < 10 has been reported for a large number of estuaries at all seasons (e.g. Seine, Rhine and Scheldt Estuaries; Duinker et al., 1979; Ouddane et al., 1997). This Mn source was attributed either to sediment mobilization (Duinker et al., 1979; Rhine and Scheldt Estuaries) or release from river-derived particles due to competing exchange process between dissolved Ca(II) and Mg(II) and the Mn embedded in calcium carbonates lattices (Ouddane et al., 1997; Seine Estuary).
Physical and biological controls of dissolved manganese on the northern slope of the South China Sea
2019, Deep-Sea Research Part II: Topical Studies in OceanographyCitation Excerpt :However, DMn behaves non-conservatively during the initial mixing process with respect to the PRE, and its concentration declined as salinity increased (50–90% of the riverine input of DMn, estimated by the difference between the measured DMn concentration and the theoretical dilution line [TDL] in Fig. 6). The processes potentially responsible for removal of DMn in the estuary include flocculation of organic Mn complexes and particle scavenging (Duinker et al., 1979; Wang et al., 2016). The processes controlling the removal of DMn in the PRE need to be studied further, but the estuarine removal of DMn needs special attention during the study of the contribution of the PR to DMn budget in the northern SCS (Millward, 1995).
