Abstract

Capacitance-type sensing systems have few movin parts, making them extremely reliable. They are also free of mechanical hysteresis, and the sensor structure is simple and solid. A study has been made to see how these advantages might be applied to the behaviour and environment of automotive components. The results have led to the design of a position sensor for use in motor vehicles. This paper describes the design procedure used in determining the sensor structure and the properties of the capacitance-forming dielectric materials.

From Fig. 12 it is understood that the sensitivity increases with respect to increase in NO2 concentration and decreases with respect to increase in temperature. Position sensor finds application such as engine throttle plate angle measurement, steering wheel angle measurement, fuel level measurement, accelerometer and brake pedal position measurement, gear selector position measurement, transmission gear position measurement, variable valve position measurement, clutch position measurement, motor position measurement, seat position measurement and Exhaust valve recirculation (EGR) valve position measurement in automotive applications [156–165]. Based on the sensing techniques position sensor classified as resistance based or potentiometric position sensors, Hall Effect based magnetic position sensors, capacitive position sensors, optical position sensors, anisotropic magneto resistive (AMR) position sensors, giant magneto resistive (GMR) position sensors and magnetostrictive linear position sensor.
