Summary
A two-dimensional model for the creation of ocean waves afterMiles is transplanted to the free atmosphere. Gravity waves on surfaces of density-discontinuity produce rotational motion and sometimes rotor clouds in a zone far away from the initial disturbance. The so-called “critical height” depending mainly on the vertical wind profileU(z) is calculated and an executed W. K. B.-approximation shows that the center of “cats'-eyes” absorbs rather than transmits or reflects wave energy. A convergent series of solutions for the perturbation velocitiesu(z) andw(z) is presented.
In the horizontal scale the mesofront in the development of active thunderstorms is a further example of interest in this mechanism.
