Summary
For the first time three strains of the newly described species of pathogenic Naegleria,N. australiensis De Jonckheere 1981 were isolated from a thermally polluted canal in Western Germany. They were pathogenic for mice with a lower mortality and a longer incubation period compared to mice infected withN. fowleri (Carter 1970). By the immunofluorescence-method these strains could be identified asN. australiensis.
