Summary
The modal superposition method in its real form could up to now only be applied to proportionally damped MDOF systems. The damping matrix of such a system has to be a combination of the mass and stiffness matrices. The development presented here allows that condition to be disposed of. The general coupled linear system of differential equations of second order is transformed to decoupled differential equations of first and second order. All solutions of the SDOF system can now be applied to the non-proportionally damped systems too.
