Complexity out of a simple structure: The intricate multistable behaviour of an optical resonator filled with sodium atoms

Abstract

A Fabry-Perot resonator containing sodium atoms displays a variety of switching phenomena even in the simplified case of homogeneous broadening. The processes are shown to arise from the combined effects of Zeeman pumping and electronic excitation. A simple model can clarify the dazzling complexity of the observed phenomena.
