Abstract

The kinetics of pentachlorophenol (PCP) degradation by a Flavobacterium sp. ATCC 39723 has been investigated. Sodium glutamate was supplied as an additional carbon source to increase the rate of cell growth and PCP degradation. A kinetic model including PCP toxicity for cell growth and PCP inhibition of its own degradation was developed. This model was also applied to 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP) degradation by the same organism. Although PCP and DCP are degraded by different pathways, the model describes these two degradation processes very well.
